Stephanie O’Brian | Carmella Consulting

Stephanie O’Brian: From superstar competitive athlete to amazing mom and social media entrepreneur. Stephanie takes us through her experience moving to Canmore as a teenager, raising a young family, and running a successful social media agency in Canmore.

[su_box title=”Show Notes” style=”soft”]

Stephanie started skiing when she was just one year old! At the age of 13, her pursuits in competitive skiing brought her to Canmore, and she has been here ever since.

When Stephanie graduated university, her parents sold their business in Nova Scotia and relocated to Canmore. So, parents and siblings all live here.

After university, she became a full-time ski coach for development level athletes. Social media was something she loved doing on the side, but when she started her own family, it became her primary business.

With two young daughters aged two and four years, she is happy to be raising kids away from the hubbub of a big city. The culture here makes it easier to instil family values, too.

Canmore has undergone quite a transformation in the last 20 years. We have modern amenities, yet retain a likable small-town character.

Stephanie’s social media business was initially incorporated in 2007. This became Carmella Consulting two years ago, which specializes in storytelling; helping businesses tell their story through social media.

Most businesses don’t have time to create content. By getting to understand their audience, Carmella helps to craft the right message, tailors a unique social media strategy, and manages the business’s social media engagement.

Hashtag #CanmoreLife was born after an idyllic afternoon at the pond with friends and family. The hashtag which was created to share the day’s pictures on Instagram now has a following of close to a million users.

Carmella serves clients in a wide range of industries. A year ago, Stephanie was happy to discover a niche in resort marketing, a perfect match for her experience and expertise.

Carmella recently began hosting monthly social media information sessions. This is a forum where businesses in Bow Valley are invited to bring any social media questions and issues and get professional help.

Stephanie took charge of Conversation Café, an event focused on economic development, and this is now part of the newly launched Bow Valley Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber also benefits from her expertise in destination marketing.

In the space of event management, Stephanie is involved in organizing TEDx Canmore activities as well as giving marketing support to events by non-profit organizations.

For play, Stephanie still finds time to ski in the winter. In the summer, she loves bike riding, hiking with her daughters, and enjoying a camping trip with the family.

When riding with her husband, The Highline is a favourite trail, and when with kids, the Nordic Centre is the place to go.

There is certainly no need to look far for play because Canmore has so much to offer: world-class hiking, cross-country skiing, mountain bikes, and vast open spaces for all sorts of adventure.
